So you think you know everything about what happened in these parts before you arrived in the world? OR, perhaps you assume the history of our fair county is dull? Maybe you think you\'ve read everything on the subject and it\'s time to move on to fresher historical pastures? Wrong, wrong and wrong! Steve Ahle is an amateur historian and antiquarian, and he knows fascinating details and anecdotes that most "serious-minded" scholars just skim over (or even fail to notice!). After listening to Steve, you will come away feeling we live in a place of the most unique heritage! You\'ll be proud to be a citizen of Athens County, and moreover, your feet will start itching to explore every history-drenched street and back holler! Here is our oral historian with an encyclopedic memory -- we\'re lucky to have him!

Jim Shirey has an affinity to nature. Jim grew up near Gary Indiana. In the early 60\'s he worked in the steel mills, where he met his wife Sandy. After receiving a PH.D. in Mathematics from Purdue University, he moved with his family to Athens Ohio where he taught and then retired as a mathematics professor. His career as a photographer began shortly thereafter.  His photographic work honors nature by being environmentally sensitive to the flora of the area.

A reception will be held for Jim\'s� work on� Thursday, September 16� from 5:30-7:00 pm.

Public librarian, Todd Bastin, will give a presentation on the railroading history of of the City of Athens. We will take a journey in reverse, tracing the stages of decline back to the prime era, then back to the beginning of things. Athens was once directly served by the following railroads: CSX Transportation, Chessie System, Amtrak, Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, New York Central System, Kanawha & Michigan, Hocking Valley Railway, Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad, Toledo & Ohio Central Railroad, the Cincinnati, Washington & Baltimore Railroad, Nelsonville Athens & Glouster Traction Company, Hocking-Sunday Creek Traction Company, Nelsonville-Athens Electric Railway Company. Hundreds of people in our region were employed by the railroads in clerical, crew-member, maintenance and service modes.

Our railroad heritage will amaze and intrigue you, and and stir us all to visualize the future potential of this area for revitalizing alternative means of mass transportation to support the Green Revolution necessary to the success of our civilization in the 21st Century.

In the Heart of the Midwest, many people have discovered the natural beauty of the famous Hocking Hills region. We bring in guest speakers, Jannette and Patrick Quackenbush, authors of  Haunted Hocking: A Ghost Hunter’s Guide, a collection of over 55 local legends, scary tales and spine-chilling ghost stories which will make any reader shiver with fright.   Whether a skeptic or believer, anyone will enjoy these frightening bits of folklore from Lancaster to Moonville, Logan to Jackson, Wellston, Athens and beyond.

Aidan Schaeffer is a young assistant pastor who doubts his faith. His murdered ex-fiance Amanda begins to haunt him with ghostly footprints and he resolves to track down her killer.

A photographer since high school, Crystal Richmond\'s work has appeared in Country Woman magazine and Gardening How-To magazine. She has twice won the grand prize in the \'Shoot The Hills\' photo competition in the Hocking Hills region.  Her work was recently awarded a "best of" by the Photographer\'s Forum, and appeared in The Best of Photography 2009.
