Downloadable E-Audio Books: Getting Started

Quick-start Guide for eAudiobook Users

Requirements

In order to use eAudiobooks from Recorded Books, you must have:

  • A valid library card with the Nelsonville Public Library, and a free NetLibrary account.
  • A valid e-mail address (required for NetLibrary registration).
  • A PC computer that runs Windows 2000 or XP for downloading, and which has Windows Media Player 9 or 10.
  • eAudiobooks may be played on your PC computer or transferred to a portable device (see below).

Criterion for Players:

Many players are designed primarily for use with music Functions important for downloadable eAudiobooks include:

  • Support of Windows Media Player/Digital Rights Management (WMP/DRM) encrypted files.
  • Adequate memory — 256MB will hold one eight-hour book, 512MB will hold two books, 1G will hold four books, etc.
  • Bookmarking or “Off/On” defined as shutting player off without stopping/pausing, then restarting player to return to same place in file.
  • Full time display/Forward/Reverse are other aids to navigability.
  • Ability to play 34kbps WMA files.
  • Ipods are not supported.

How To Get Started

Downloading an audiobook:

Step 1 — Log in with your Library Card

  • If you're downloading e-Audio books from home, you must log in with your library card number. Logging in with your card number authenticates you as a Nelsonville Public Library user

Step 1 — Create an Account

  • You must create a free NetLibrary account
  • NetLibrary asks for your name, a username and password, and an email address.
  • Once you have created an account, you may log in and download an eAudiobook from anywhere.

Step 2 — Once Registered …

Step 3 — Choose an Audiobook

  • You can search for audio books by keyword, title, author, or narrator. You can also browse by genre by following the links in the right-hand sidebar.
  • Use Show Details and Listen to Preview to learn more about an eAudiobook.
  • You may check out up to 10 books at one time.

Step 4 — Download an Audiobook

  • Click on Download this Audiobook
  • Select a download option: CD or Radio Quality. NOTE: You must choose CD quality for transfer to a portable player.
  • A Download window will pop up asking what you want to do with the file. Choose Save and save it to My Documents , My Music , etc.

Step 5 — Acquire the License

  • Open Windows Media Player (from Programs or icon on your desktop).
  • Click on Library or use Search to find your eAudiobook.
  • The following actions are ESSENTIAL:
    • Double click on the highlighted title to acquire the license.
    • Enter your NetLibrary username and password and click Log In.
    • The license then downloads, and you are prompted to play the audiobook.
    • To stop the playback, click on the Stop button on the bottom of the Windows Media Player.

Take It on the Road

You will need an FM transmitter to listen to your MP3 player through your car stereo The cost is approximately $20-$30.

Using a Portable Device 

Process to Transfer:

  • Make sure you have downloaded the CD Quality file to your computer.
  • Make sure you have already opened the eAudiobook in Windows Media Player 9 or 10 and acquired the license prior to beginning the transfer.

Step 1 — Attach your portable player to your computer.

Step 2 — Double click on the file you downloaded.

Step 3 — See below.

If using Windows Media Player 9:

  • Select Copy to Device or CD from the menu on the left side of the screen.
  • Use the pull-down menu at the top of the right side of your screen to list All Music.
  • Choose your device from the drop-down menu on the right side of the screen. Make sure the box next to the book you want to download is checked.
  • Click on the Copy button on the top to the right of your screen.

If using Windows Media Player 10:

  • The file will show up on the right side. Right click on the file, select Add to , and then select Sync List .
  • Select Sync from the menu at the top of the player.
  • The name of your plugged in device should be in the right panel of the screen.
  • Your audiobook should be in the Sync list on the left panel of the player. Put a check in the checkbox.
  • Click the Start Sync button on the upper left.

Do not disconnect device while copying is in process. After copy is done, click on the icon with the green arrow at the bottom right corner of your screen.
